DACHSER names Jan-Michael Beyer as Thailand lead

Jan-Michael Beyer was appointed Managing Director Air & Sea Logistics Thailand on April 27, 2019. In his new role, he reports to Edoardo Podestá, Managing Director Air & Sea Logistics Asia Pacific.

Prior to his latest appointment, he was Country Manager for Thailand, and Head of Sales Air & Sea Logistics Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia. His customer driven mindset and solutions driven approach have allowed him to address specific customers’ needs in Thailand.

Thailand is a major logistic hub in the region with one of the most developed industries within ASEAN. Being the second largest economy in South East Asia, this country has huge potential in many aspects.

Born in 1984, Beyer completed his degree studies in transport and logistics management, and then gained his first work experience in a logistics company in Hamburg. In 2007, he joined DACHSER in Germany and shortly later relocated to Asia where he has held several positions with a strong focus in sales.  After successfully managing sales activities in Thailand since 2015, he was promoted to Head of Sales Air & Sea Logistics Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia in 2018, which gave him extended responsibilities across the South East Asian region. 

During his tenure in Thailand, Beyer established many relevant services, such as customized daily air freight round trips between Europe and Thailand.

Looking forward

“Together with our team, I believe we can further develop sales from the local market and unleash its potential to our DACHSER network,” Beyer said. “And from a logistical point of view, Thailand is a fascinating place. I am looking forward to working closely with our professional teams to combine our experiences and skills to drive our business to the next level,” he added.

On the side, the young and tireless logistics professional is currently reading a Master’s Degree in International Business, hoping that the additional knowledge will help him in his newly assumed role.

Coronavirus: updates on DACHSER’s operations in China and Hong Kong

In this update, we would like to share with you an overview our operations as well as the general situation in China as of Februray 7.

DACHSER Branches

  • Most of the DACHSER branches, will resume working on Monday, February 10, however there could be further changes on short notice.
  • Wuhan branch is scheduled to re-open on February 14,  to be confirmed depending on the situation. The Wuhan team will be operating remotely and reachable via their usual mobile contacts. Part of the operations will be handled via our Shanghai team.
  • Hong Kong branch is fully operational. We continue to monitor the situation closely and will advise if our ability to operate is impacted.

Transport logistics in China

While we are trying our best to keep your supply chain as smooth as possible, please be so kind to consider delays and other operational issues may happen, due to:

  • Road: heavy restrictions are put in place for trucking across the provinces, for example road access to Shanghai is heavily controlled which may affect delivery to Shanghai Port and Shanghai Pudong Airport; transportation certificate is needed for trucks to enter or exit the Hubei Province;
  • Air: Many of the airlines suspended passenger flights to and from China. Still, air shipment can be handled, except Wuhan, subject to carriers’ availability and schedule;
  • Sea: Carriers have reduced sailings to and from China, however ocean terminals are operating, except Wuhan.

We have contingency measures in place and will offer the best alternative solutions to you in case any shipment is affected.

General overview of the situation in China

  • Heavy travel ban for local and inter-province travel. Trains, subway and buses suspended operations;
  • Local authorities requested enterprises not to resume work until midnight of February 9, meaning that business operations could start on February 10;
  • Most of the factories in China will soon start resuming production; however due to travel restrictions and preventative measures to reduce the chance of being infected, most of the factories and workplace will not have their full team to operate.

Brexit – what does it mean for Air & Sea Logistics?

We face the possible event that the United Kingdom will leave the European Union by the end of October 2019.

This will affect shipments from and to the UK and delays are to be expected. Reasons are amongst others that a higher percentage of shipments has to be processed by customs authorities and that European shippers might switch to Air Freight to avoid border controls.

We expect delays particularly for shipments that do not move into the UK directly or out of the UK directly but via continental Europe. For example if Sea Freight shipments are unloaded in Rotterdam and then forwarded to the UK via truck and ferry:

  • Fiscal representation in continental Europe will no longer be possible for goods to the UK. Instead, a transit procedure must be opened.
  • The expected problems in Calais/Dover will cause delays in the delivery of goods to the UK.
  • Incoterms for subsequent deliveries from the EU to the UK may also have to be converted if necessary, as costs for customs clearance have to be included.

Therefore we strongly suggest to ship directly to the UK whenever possible, at least for some time following the Brexit until things clear up.
