DACHSER Hong Kong provides tailored sea import solutions to a leading building services company

The customer, headquartered in the dynamic hub, sources materials from around the globe, including Australia, Germany, and China, to meet the region's building needs and serves as distributors for over 20 global construction material brands.

It’s journey with DACHSER started in 2022, when challenges loomed on the horizon to ship building materials from Germany to Hong Kong. Space constraints and demurrage charges threatened to disrupt the course. Yet, DACHSER's logistics experts, like seasoned captains, charted a course toward tailored solutions of sea imports. The team meticulously selected carriers and engaged with shippers, navigating through the supply chain storm to ensure a safe arrival of goods. The maiden voyage was a success – 10 TEUs of building materials safely docked in Hong Kong.

Encouraged by this milestone, DACHSER remained resolute in their pursuit of excellence. In 2023, the logistics service provider returned to the customer with an even more ambitious proposal.

Confronting the Tides of Challenges

The sea import operations were far from serene. In Germany, loading slots were rare, and demurrage charges cast a shadow of concern. The countdown from container yard (CY) open to estimated time of departure (ETD) was a mere seven days, creating a whirlpool of uncertainty.

Multiple carrier options were laid before the customer, ensuring they could select the perfect vessel to meet their estimated time of arrival (ETA) requirements. Communication became the anchor that held the supply chain together, securing loading slots. As soon as booking confirmations arrived, the team sprang into action, orchestrating loading at the shipper's facilities like a well-practiced symphony, eliminating delays.

By the midsummer of 2023, DACHSER had orchestrated the seamless movement of dozens of TEUs from Germany to Hong Kong. The global economy is recovering from the shock of the pandemic and in many places production is once again running at full speed. However, articles about the shortfall in raw materials and products, too few containers and pallets, the driver shortage, and a lack of storage space on overland, sea, and air transports are putting a damper on this revival.

COVID-19: updates on DACHSER’s operations in China and Korea

We would like to inform you about the latest update on the market situations and current status of DACHSER’s operations in China and South Korea.

China

All DACHSER branches in China are open except Wuhan. Starting from March 2, most branches are operating with full teams, but the operations are not resuming to full capacity, as the local market conditions are still very challenging with shortage of labor and traffic controls. Domestic trucking remains a major issue.

General status in China

Factories are slowly picking up with their productions. Compared with last week, more factories have resumed work, but production is not up to 100% normal, while some of the factories are either still closed or operating with skeleton staffing. Generally, all businesses are gradually resuming. In many locations, authorities only allow a limited number of staff to enter the premises to prevent workplace infection. Therefore, most of the enterprises are operating with skeleton staffing, and have part of their employees working from home, if applicable. Employees who returned from the Hubei province are required to stay in quarantine for 14 days before returning to workplace. This quarantine restriction also applies to truck drivers.

DACHSER branches in China

  • All DACHSER branches except Wuhan are open and resumed business. Wuhan is closed until further notice.
  • A few DACHSER branches are operating with skeleton staffing due to local authorities’ preventive measures.
  • Employees, if not in the office, are working from home to keep the operations ongoing.
  • There are delays in some processes, as most of the units in the supply chain within China are not functioning in full capacity.

Transport logistics in China

While we are trying our best to keep your supply chain as smooth as possible, please consider that other units in the supply chain did not resume full capacity yet. Carriers and terminals are gradually resuming operations with skeleton staff. Delays and other operational issues are expected.

Road:

  • Lack of truckers is currently the major issue in China.
  • Inter-cities and inter-provinces trucking are especially challenging due to heavy regulations on road, making road journeys heavily delayed.

Railway:

  • Rail carriers resumed to work from March except Wuhan and Yiwu, total capacity is higher compared with February.
  • Rail terminals are operating (except Wuhan) overtime to achieve higher volume of container handling.
  • Customs are operating except Wuhan.
  • FCL service on pre/on-carriage has resumed.
  • FTL service is available.
  • LTL service is available for some districts.

Air:

  • Airlines increased freighters from China as factories has gradually resuming production.
  • Capacity is still an issue since many of the airlines suspended passenger flights.
  • It is expected that space will get tighter towards end of March as factories production is ramping up.

Sea:

  • Shortage of truckers and equipment
  • Carriers have reduced sailings to and from China.
  • Westbound: Cargo volume is recovering as more factories are resuming production; backlog is expected once the factories are fully operative, leading to shortage of truckers and space.
  • Eastbound: Intense space shortage
  • Ocean terminals are operating, except Wuhan.

South Korea

Overall, the factories are open and operating normally except in Daegu where some factories are closed because their staff was infected with the virus. Business are mostly not affected, some enterprises including some of the carriers are having special working arrangement such as implementing flexible working hours or allowing staff to work from home.

DACHSER branches in South Korea

All DACHSER branches in Korea are currently open. To protect the safety of our staff, employees are asked to work from home whenever applicable. The operations teams are working on shift in the office at flexible hours to keep our service delays to minimal.

Transport logistics in South Korea

Air:

  • Intra-Asian flag carriers have suspended passenger flights to and from South Korea. Therefore more than 50% of the capacity is reduced.

Sea:

  • Currently there are no major impacts except blank sailing.

Domestic trucking:

  • Minor delays for pick-up and delivery especially to and from Daegu due to road restrictions and preventive measures, no major issues at other places with in South Korea.

Air freight market update | December 2021

Global pandemic measures as well as continuing high demand have a strong impact on the air freight market. This is reflected in reduced cargo capacities due to restricted and partly suspended passenger flight connections, congested airports, handling facilities and employees.

  • Review 2021

The increase in air freight demand since the beginning of the year cannot be satisfied with the current air freight capacities. Though, a slight improvement is noticeable. 
 
All major airports worldwide have been congested resulting in huge backlog volumes and long waiting times. However, with secured premium capacities on its own weekly charter rotations between Asia, Europe and the US, as well as long-term freight allotments on regular airline services worldwide, DACHSER continued to be a reliable partner also in the second year of the pandemic.
 
The increased demand for consumer goods, the huge growth in e-commerce, and the procurement of medical equipment due to COVID-19 led to an increased number of individual partial and full charter transports.

  • Current Situation

Manufacturing and trading industries remain affected by congested supply chains. Therefore, the demand for air freight capacity is still increasing, in addition to the regular Peak Season during Christmas and Chinese New Year.

Hong Kong

Due to the strict quarantine policy in Hong Kong, some airlines have cancelled their flights before Christmas. The resulting shortage of ground handling staff is causing significant service restrictions at Hong Kong Airport.

Export shipments can currently only be delivered to the terminal within 24 hours prior to estimated departure. Shipments without booking record will not be accepted. There is also an overload situation in import and delays have to be expected.

Hong Kong Airport had already announced in early December that cargo aircraft touching Omicron high-risk countries such as South Africa would not be allowed into Hong Kong until further notice. This leads to a shortage of cargo space and delays due to flight re-routings.

Frankfurt / Germany

At Frankfurt Airport, there are also still some delays in handling, especially at Frankfurt Cargo Service (FCS). Export handling has been delayed, and import handling has been subject to extended waiting times. The warehouses at all handling agents are full, especially at FCS.

Ad-hoc charter business

DACHSER is currently operating several full charter flights as part of a project transport between China and Austria. Read more about this project.

  • Outlook 2022

The tense situation will remain throughout the first half of 2022, easing slightly after Chinese New Year. On the other hand, air freight capacity will increase only gradually, as belly capacity will remain low.

Due to the unpredictable course of the pandemic and a still unstable ocean freight market, leaves plenty of scope for the development of the air freight market in 2022.

  • DACHSER Air Network

DACHSER is extending its own premium air freight services between Hong Kong and Europe in 2022 and beyond. With this extension, 100 additional cargo tons on weekly 747-400 freighter flights will extend the capacity on this route.

The premium freighter capacities from Asia (Hong Kong & Shanghai) to Europe and between Europe and the USA (rotation) are already an integral part of the DACHSER network for a long time now, and DACHSER is looking forward to continue providing this service to help secure customers' global supply chains.
