The city is a renowned cultural, historical and touristic city. It enjoys a fame of "Paradise on Earth" with over 60 classical gardens among which 9 are listed in the Catalogue of World Cultural Heritage.
Suzhou plays an important role since it is ranked on number 2 (GDP) compared with other large and middle size cities in China's economic development (2006 figure).
